TB
is a bacterial disease affecting the lungs that is spread from
person to person through the air. Those in close and ongoing
contact with a person with active, symptomatic TB are at greatest
risk for exposure. According to the Texas Department of State
Health Services, 379 new cases of TB were diagnosed in Harris County
in 2005 – a rate of 10.2 per 100,000 persons, more than twice the
national rate of 4.8 cases per 100,000 persons and more than 50%
higher [corrected] than the State rate of 6.7 cases per 100,000
persons
