National Public Health Week
April 2 – 8, 2007
Despite growing threats, whether natural or man-made, Americans remain largely unprepared for public health emergencies, from bioterrorism and natural disasters to disease outbreaks.
In February 2007, the American Public Health Association (APHA) conducted a survey and noted that only 27 percent of the public has a three-day supply of water, food, and medicine and a reliable first aid kit. This means that in the event of a long-term public health emergency, many families would run out of these supplies quickly.
National Public Health Week (NPHW), April 2-8, 2007, is dedicated to empowering residents and leaders to take steps toward planning and preparing for health events. This year’s theme is, “Take the First Step! Preparedness and Public Health Threats: Addressing the Unique Needs of the Nation’s Vulnerable Populations.”
Everyone needs to be prepared. But for some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations, being prepared is an even bigger challenge because of the additional accommodations needed to meet their specific needs.
NPHW 2007 highlights five core audiences who are vulnerable to health dangers:
As part of the week-long observance, communities across the nation will explore ways to connect vulnerable populations with resources that are tailored to their unique needs and spur them toward becoming better prepared.
Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services (HCPHES) supports the NPHW 2007 campaign of inspiring all Americans to “Take the First Step”.
