Environmental Epidemiology

Environmental Epidemiology is an area of public health that applies epidemiological methods to the evaluation of potential human health risks that result from exposures to environmental conditions and hazards.

HCPHES Environmental Epidemiology conducts medical surveillance following selected events that might place the community at risk. Environmental Epidemiology also assists the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) with the Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) project. The HSEES project describes the public health consequences of spills or releases of hazardous chemicals.

HCPHES Environmental Epidemiology is investigating potential uses for the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) data with Texas Cancer Registry data. The TRI is a publicly available US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) database containing information on chemical releases. TRI data can be accessed by chemical compound, geographic region, or specific industries.
