SUNBURN

A sunburn may be present if the person has been in the sun and the skin is red, painful and abnormally warm.  Use sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher on all uncovered areas of skin when in the sun.  The most effective sunscreens say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on the label. Consult a doctor if the person who has the sunburn:

1.      is younger than 1 year of age;

2.      has a fever;

3.      has fluid-filled blisters; or,

4.      is in severe pain.

Treatment:

Ø      Avoid repeated sun exposure.

Ø      Apply cold towel or soak the sunburned area in cool water.

Ø      Apply moisturizing lotion to the areas.  Do not use salve, butter, or ointment.

Ø      Do not break blisters.
