     Quit Tips

Smokeless Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco comes in two basic forms, snuff and chewing tobacco.  Snuff is finely ground tobacco packaged in cans or pouches. Chewing tobacco comes in the form of long strands of loose leaves, plugs, or twists of tobacco.  Smokeless tobacco products are not a safe substitute for tobacco smoking.  Harmful health effects include:

  • oral (mouth) cancer
  • addiction to nicotine
  • white sores in the mouth that can lead to cancer
  • gums slowly shrink away from around the teeth
  • bone loss around the roots of the teeth
  • staining of teeth
  • bad breath

Smokeless tobacco may also play a role in heart disease and high blood pressure.  There are many reasons to quit using smokeless tobacco for good.  Health reasons are obvious.  But consider the following as well.

  • Social Acceptance. Bad breath, gum disease, and discolored teeth are very unappealing.
  • Cost. A tobacco habit can be expensive. Multiply the cost per year by 10 (for the next 10 years) and ask yourself what you would rather do with that much money.
  • Setting an Example.  If you have children in your life, you want to set a good example for them. When asked, nearly all smokeless tobacco users say they don’t want their children to chew or dip. You can become a good role model for them if you quit now.
